Operating Boundaries & Specifications

Connector performance is subject to environmental and application-specific constraints. We disclose these boundaries so engineering teams can make informed selection decisions.

Temperature Derating Standard commercial-grade connectors are rated -40 to +85 deg C. Extended range variants (-55 to +125 deg C) require silver-plated contacts and fluorosilicone seals, increasing unit cost by approximately 30-50%. Applications above +200 deg C require ceramic-bodied specialty connectors outside our standard catalog.
RF Performance at Frequency Extremes Standard SMA connectors maintain VSWR below 1.3:1 up to 18 GHz. Above 26.5 GHz, 2.92mm or 1.85mm precision interfaces are required. Insertion loss increases non-linearly above 40 GHz, and cable assembly phase stability becomes critical for test and measurement applications.
Mating Cycle Limitations MIL-DTL-38999 Series III connectors are qualified for 500 mating cycles. Exceeding this limit may degrade contact resistance beyond 2.5 milliohms. For applications requiring frequent connect/disconnect (test fixtures, maintenance panels), we recommend quick-disconnect or push-pull alternatives rated for 5,000+ cycles.
IP Rating Conditions IP67/IP68 ratings are validated under controlled laboratory conditions per IEC 60529 (1 meter depth, 30 minutes for IP67). Field installations with UV exposure, salt spray, or sustained vibration may reduce effective seal life. We recommend gasket replacement every 5 years in harsh outdoor telecom environments.
Custom Lead Times While 95% of standard catalog orders ship within 24 hours, fully custom OEM designs require 4-8 weeks for initial prototyping and 8-14 weeks for production tooling. First article quantities under 500 units carry tooling amortization surcharges.
Material Compatibility Standard brass alloy bodies (CuZn39Pb3) are not suitable for marine or high-salinity environments without additional nickel or passivated plating. Stainless steel (316L) body options are available for offshore and subsea applications but increase weight by approximately 40%.

Connector Selection: Method Trade-offs

Selecting the right interconnect solution involves trade-offs across multiple dimensions. The table below outlines key selection factors to help engineering teams evaluate options for their specific application requirements.

Selection Factor RF Coaxial (SMA/N-Type) Circular Mil-Spec (MIL-DTL-38999) Fiber Optic (LC/MPO) Industrial (M12/M8)
Bandwidth DC to 26.5 GHz (SMA), DC to 11 GHz (N) Signal: varies by insert; power: up to 500V Up to 400G per lane (single-mode) Up to 10 Gbps (X-coded M12)
Environmental Rating IP67 with weatherproof boots MIL-STD-810H (shock, vib, salt fog, altitude) IP67 with ruggedized assemblies IP67 standard, IP69K available
Mating Cycles 500 (standard), 5000+ (precision) 500 (qualified), extended life available 500-1000 (physical contact), unlimited (expanded beam) 100-500 depending on coding
Typical Lead Time Stock to 2 weeks 4-12 weeks (QPL controlled) Stock to 3 weeks Stock to 2 weeks
Cost Range (per unit) $2 - $45 $15 - $300+ $3 - $80 $5 - $25
